What is couples therapy and who is it for?

Couples therapy offers a safe space where you and your partner can come together and talk openly about your challenges, needs, and goals for your relationship. Our couples therapists are impartial third parties who can help you navigate through tough conversations, understand each other’s perspectives, and find practical solutions to strengthen your connection.

In this supportive environment, you both have the opportunity to express your feelings and concerns constructively, without fear of judgment. Through effective communication techniques and exercises, our therapists will guide you in developing a deeper understanding of each other and learn how to communicate more effectively. By working together, you can build a stronger foundation for your relationship and create a more fulfilling and harmonious partnership.

Love doesn’t make it easy. Love is the committed grit that enables you to learn the skills to make it worthwhile.

If you are feeling misunderstood, disrespected, or betrayed, couples therapy can help you and your partner:

Improve Communication

Effective communication is the cornerstone of a healthy relationship. In couples therapy, you’ll learn practical strategies to express your thoughts and feelings openly and honestly, while also developing the skills to actively listen and empathize with your partner’s perspective. By fostering clear and respectful communication, you can cultivate a deeper understanding of each other, leading to greater harmony and connection in your relationship.

Infidelity can shatter trust and destabilize a relationship. In couples therapy, you’ll have the opportunity to address the underlying issues that contributed to the infidelity and work through the pain and betrayal together. Through open dialogue and guided exercises, you’ll rebuild trust by fostering transparency, accountability, and a renewed commitment to each other. With the support of a trained therapist, you can heal from the wounds of infidelity and move forward toward a stronger, more resilient relationship.

Intimacy goes beyond physical closeness—it’s about feeling deeply connected and understood by your partner. Couples therapy provides a safe space to explore and nurture intimacy on all levels, from sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings to rediscovering the passion and romance in your relationship. By learning to communicate authentically and express vulnerability, you can cultivate a deeper emotional bond and reignite the spark of intimacy, fostering a fulfilling and satisfying connection with your partner.

Life is full of ups and downs, and how you navigate these challenges as a couple can strengthen your bond or create tension. In couples therapy, you’ll learn practical strategies to tackle common stressors such as financial strain, parenting conflicts, and managing busy schedules. By developing effective problem-solving skills and fostering open communication, you can face life’s obstacles as a united front, building resilience and solidarity in your relationship.

Creating Shared Meaning: In therapy, you’ll discover what’s important to both of you and find common ground in your values, goals, and dreams. By developing shared routines and goals, you’ll build a stronger bond and give your relationship more depth and purpose.

Your journey is unique to you;
your therapy should be too.

Gottman Method

All of our couples therapy utilizes evidence-based care including the Gottman Therapy method.

*Within each program, we may occasionally meet individually if there is a piece of individual work that can be completed to assist in moving the couples’ goals forward. Or we may refer you for individual therapy.

*Couples who enter our programs begin with an assessment process that then informs the therapeutic framework and intervention. Therapeutic Interventions are designed to help couples strengthen their relationships in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and creation of shared meaning. Couples learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts. Interventions and skills designed to increase closeness and intimacy are used to improve friendship, deepen emotional connection, and create changes which enhances the couples’ shared goals. Relapse prevention is also addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Therapy

Yes! Many people come to therapy as they feel they need support in decision-making around their relationship, or they want to talk through things that have happened. While in a relationship, it can sometimes feel like everything is our partner’s fault, coming to individual therapy can help you regain a sense of control over what’s been happening. Looking within, identifying your needs, and growth opportunities can be a wonderful experience that can help you in the achievement of your goals leading to increased happiness, and life satisfaction.

Nope! Couples therapy is an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of who you and your partner are, and how your early life experiences have contributed to your current values and beliefs. The foundation of every successful relationship is strong communication, and proactive conversations about important life experiences, shared, values, meaning, and goals. Couples therapy can help you navigate major life transitions, such as getting married, having a baby, moving in together, sharing finances, and navigating the challenges that come along even within the healthiest of relationships. Couples therapy helps build a strong foundation to give you success for years to come.

Our assessment process for all programs is three steps. Firstly, a skilled therapist meets with both of you to understand who you are, what brought you into therapy, and your history together. After that you each complete metrics. Next, your therapist meets with you individually. Thirdly, you come back together with your therapist to go over your assessment and treatment plan. There you collectively decide what program is the best fit for you. Most couples begin to see a change after several sessions, as we provide immediately helpful skills and interventions to move you towards your goals. Some couples may benefit from short-term therapy, consisting of a few sessions, while others may require longer-term therapy to address more complex issues. This can be discussed in greater detail with your therapist.

Absolutely not! Our therapists are highly trained and create a non-judgmental, open space where you and your partner can feel seen and heard. We are focused on helping you and your partner achieve your goals while facilitating a deeper understanding of each other. We are committed to providing clinical expertise while listening with empathy and compassion. Our goal is to create a space where you feel secure and comfortable sharing your emotions, thoughts, and feelings during therapy. We don’t assign blame, take sides, or have favourites. Rest assured, we are here to support you both while partnering to get you to where you both want to go.

All of our couples therapy programs are designed with evidence-based, best practices, skills, and interventions. Rest assured that all of our programs can help you and your partner in numerous ways.
