Why Teen Therapy?
Teenage life can be a phase full of energy, hope, life, joy, beauty, and passion. Despite many advantages, being a teenager in today’s world is not easy.
Teenagers face many challenges; making the right decisions, choosing the right environment and people, expressing emotions, etc. Social Media, school pressures, bullying, navigating expectations, hormones, changing bodies, and privacy & independence are a lot to manage. Sometimes life can feel overwhelming, and teens may withdraw, become argumentative, isolate, surround themselves with new or no friends, or turn to drugs or alcohol.
Teen counselling can be extremely effective in helping teenagers deal with issues such as anxiety, trauma, and grief, and is helpful for the everyday struggle of maturing and maintaining an optimistic outlook. It can provide a safe space to air concerns, and an opportunity to learn skills and strategies to bring about positive changes in their thoughts and behaviours.
We offer therapy that keeps up with the fast-paced, ever-changing world of teenagers.

What can teen therapy help with?
Struggles with Big Emotions
If you notice your teen's emotions going from 0 to 100 really quickly or they seem to stay upset for a long time and have trouble feeling better, it may be a good idea to seek help.
Trouble Navigating Emotions
Let’s be real, your teen may experience a bunch of different feelings each day, and sometimes these feelings are tough to handle. If they're finding it hard to cope and it's affecting school, relationships, or their sense of self, therapy can help. Stress or anxiety anyone? Therapy can definitely assist with that too!
Big Changes in Mood or Behaviour
If you observe significant changes in your teen's life, such as withdrawing from friends or family, losing interest in activities they once loved, or noticeable shifts in mood, it could be a sign that therapy may be beneficial for them.
Challenges Building & Maintaining Relationships
Teen relationships can be challenging, yet they're often a vital part of life! If you notice your teen struggling in this area, a therapist can assist them in developing stronger interpersonal skills to express their needs, set healthy boundaries, and foster meaningful relationships.
Uncertainty or Confusion
Life can be overwhelming with all its decisions and experiences, leaving your teen feeling uncertain or confused about what's right for them. Therapy provides a supportive space to help them figure out who they are, what they want, and where they want to go.
Thoughts or Behaviours of Self-harm or Suicide
If your teen experiences thoughts of self-harm or suicide or engages in harmful behaviours, it's crucial to seek support promptly. They're not alone, and therapists are here to help them through this difficult time.
Therapy can help teens feel heard, understood, and supported to navigate life’s challenges.

How does teen therapy help?
If your teen is feeling anxious, misunderstood or unsure about their identity and how they fit into their world, therapy can provide:
Understanding and Support
Teen therapy provides a space for teens to express their feelings and experiences openly, without fear of judgment. This environment encourages honest communication between teens and their parents, fostering deeper understanding and empathy. Through therapy, parents gain insight into the unique pressures and struggles their teen faces, allowing them to offer more effective support and guidance.
Space to Explore Their Identity
Counselling offers a safe and supportive environment for teens to explore their sense of self and identity. Therapists help adolescents navigate the complexities of identity formation, encouraging them to explore their interests, values, and beliefs. By delving into these aspects, teens gain clarity about who they are and what they aspire to become, fostering a stronger sense of purpose and direction in life.
Tools for Building Confidence
Therapy provides teens with tools and techniques to enhance their self-confidence and self-esteem. Through guided exploration and positive reinforcement, adolescents learn to recognize their strengths and accomplishments, building a foundation of self-assurance. As they develop a more positive self-image, teens become more resilient in the face of challenges, better equipped to handle setbacks and adversity.
Validation and Acceptance
In therapy, teens receive support for their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, fostering a sense of acceptance and worth. Therapists create a non-judgmental space where teens feel heard, understood, and respected. This validation supports their experiences and feelings, helping them develop a sense of self-worth and belonging.
Skills for Life Challenges
Teen therapy equips adolescents with practical skills and strategies to navigate life’s challenges effectively. Therapists teach coping mechanisms, stress management techniques, and problem-solving skills tailored to the unique needs of teens. By learning how to identify and address issues such as depression, anxiety, and peer pressure, adolescents gain confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles and thrive in various areas of their lives.

Questions Teens Ask About Therapy
Do I need therapy?
Therapy is a confidential conversation with someone you trust who is clinically trained to help you reach goals that are important to you. Thankfully, therapy is super common nowadays and lots of people participate in it. Therapy can be beneficial for anyone, not just people struggling with severe or persistent mental health issues. If you are struggling with your emotions, your friends, your focus, or you simply want a place to chat without judgment, therapy can be super helpful.
Do I come to therapy with my parents?
Not necessarily! It’s important that you have one on one time with your therapist where you feel safe to discuss whatever topic you want to, without stressing about how your parents may react. Sometimes, with your permission, we like involving parents in the process as this can occasionally be helpful too… especially if there are family-related issues that need to be discussed. Chat with your therapist about your feelings on this topic; they’ve got your back.
What will you tell my parents?
Everything we chat about is private, with a few small exceptions related to your safety. Before you have your first session, we’ll talk about these very specific exceptions so that you have all of the information. We want you to know that you can come to your sessions and trust that what you say is private and that we’ve got you.
How long does therapy last?
There’s no cut and dry answer here because everyone, just like you, is unique! Research shows us that most people begin to feel some change within a few sessions while others attend for months or years. You can keep coming to therapy for as long as you need! Even once we’ve accomplished your goals and you’re feeling great, therapy can be a place for you to chill out, talk things through or get great advice from someone you trust.
A question from parents… Am I involved with therapy at all?
Yes! You’re with your teen the most, so your involvement and support are key for your teen’s positive experience and therapy. Often you’re the one who reached out for services, and you’ll be required to participate in terms of having a review of practice, policies, how therapy works, etc., We may also reach out to you to check in about what you’re noticing about your teen’s mood and behaviours since starting therapy. There may be times when we request a separate parent session where you come to a session without your teen to process what’s going on and learn skills to support you in responding to your teen’s needs. Sometimes, we do a family session with you and your teen to go over communication skills between the family members so your teen can practice asking for what they need. During these sessions, we can also coach you on how to support them with whatever they’re going through.
Please don’t hesitate to connect with us! We would be happy to hear from you with any questions you may have, or to enquire about booking sessions with one of our qualified clinicians.

Some people start feeling better after a few sessions, while others continue for months or even years. How long your teen comes to therapy will vary because everyone is different.
That being said, they can keep coming to therapy for as long as they need! Even after they’ve achieved their goals and are feeling good, therapy can still be a helpful space to relax, talk things through, or get advice from someone they trust.
