The Role of Therapy in Managing Teen Anxiety

Many teenagers experience significant levels of anxiety, which can have a profound impact on their mental health. According to the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health, 39% of Ontario high-school students indicate a moderate-to-serious level of psychological distress (symptoms of anxiety and depression). If anxiety is left unchecked, it can affect a teen’s development and quality of life. It is, therefore, critical to understand teenage anxiety.

Understanding Teen Anxiety

There are various types of anxiety disorders which plague teens. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is marked by excessive, uncontrollable worry about everyday situations. Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) involves an intense fear of social situations, leading to isolation from friends and activities. Panic disorder is characterized by repeated, intense periods of fear or panic attacks, which can feel debilitating.

Causes of Teen Anxiety

Anxiety can be caused by single or multiple factors. Biological factors such as genetics and brain chemistry can play a significant role. Environmental stressful influences such as bullying or the loss of a loved one can exacerbate anxiety in teens. Teens face unbelievable pressure to fit in at school and to succeed in their schoolwork, leading to anxiety. Family dynamics, such as high parental expectations or overprotective parenting, can contribute to increased levels of anxiety in teens. Understanding the signs and symptoms of anxiety can help you to recognize if your teen is suffering from anxiety.

Signs & Symptoms of Teen Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest itself in different ways, resulting in physical, behavioural, emotional, social, and academic symptoms. Physical manifestations may include unexplained headaches, heart palpitations, and nausea. Teenagers grappling with anxiety might experience overwhelming fear, an intense sense of impending doom, or excessive worry, all of which may lead them to isolate themselves or withdraw from social situations. At school, they may have difficulty concentrating, impacting their academic performance. They may also have trouble making friends or interacting with peers at school. Given the diverse impact anxiety can have on teenagers, it is essential to explore the professional support available to help them navigate and alleviate their stress.

Types of Teen Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a common therapy used to treat anxiety. It involves identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and replacing them with positive, balanced ones. This causes them to change their emotional responses and behaviours, causing them to build confidence and reduce their anxiety.

Sometimes, the source of the teen’s anxiety is within the family dynamics. Involving the family in therapy is powerful in addressing this. The goals of family therapy include enhancing family communication, resolving misunderstandings, and addressing familial conflicts to alleviate adolescent stress.

Teenagers sometimes find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their struggles. Group therapy provides a safe space for teens to gain insight from their peers who have shared experiences and learn coping strategies. It also helps teens build social skills and confidence.
